SAAM Day of Action: Tuesday, April 5: Wear teal. Take selfies/photos and post. Use hashtags such as #SAAM2022, #SupportSurvivors, #SAAMDayofAction2022
Create a relevant challenge to promote: Much like the ice water challenge, what would be a great way to bring attention in a video?
Share an “attention grabber” on your social media pages: I’m afraid that I have some personal reasons for this post. Life gets messy and sometimes presents difficult moments. You realize who in your circle of family and friends appreciate and support the causes you support. I stand with survivors of sexual assault. During April especially, we want to change attitudes and understandings of what sexual assault is. Sexual assault is very prevalent. Sexual violence impacts everyone, but marginalized people are most at risk. Nationally, one in four women and one in six men have experienced sexual violence, including more than 50% of LGBTQ+ people. No one is responsible for being assaulted. The only person responsible is the perpetrator who chose to harm somebody. It’s very likely you know someone who has been sexually assaulted. Less than half of survivors disclose or report their assaults. Share or copy and paste on your page so we can show the power of community and the willingness to change how society views sexual assault. To all survivors who still battle to overcome, we hear you and stand with you. Here is a virtual hug for each of you and your family. Don’t be afraid to stand with survivors and post this on your page. Join me also in sharing LaFASA’s Helpline information at lafasa.org.
Decorate Your Facebook Page/cover photo with teal colors or teal ribbons. Use SAAM filters or frames on your profile pic.
Create a Geofilter for Snapchat: What is a geofilter? Snapchat Geofilters are photo overlays that go on top of pictures for Snaps. Why are geofilters so popular? They are fun because they’re only available to a certain area over a certain time frame. So, if you’re not there, you’re going to miss out. The create FOMO! It makes the snap VERY SPECIAL that only those in a specific area can see your filter. How do you use Snapchat geofilters? In order to add a geofilter to a Snap, you have to be in the area where the geofilter is scheduled. In addition, you have to make sure your location settings are turned on for your Snapchat app. It’s super simple, and Snapchat has a tutorial on how to do it.
Writing/Blogging – Share articles from LaFASA’s Blog or dedicate entries in your blog to sexual assault awareness
Write an Op-Ed: Write from your experience as a believer, advocate, or personal or channel your passion. Stories written from this POV are much more powerful. Send to the op-ed section of your local print-media/newspaper.
Write to your Representatives: Write to your state and federal representatives in support of legislature that supports survivors.
Engage your local media. Go to our youtube page to see how you can do this.
Have a virtual Trivia Night Party. MyQuiz.org is EASY, FREE, and FUN!
Do a “Teal Rocks” Scavenger Hunt! Start by painting rocks with positive messages or SAAM messages. Place the rocks around your neighborhood, park, city, or town. Put LaFASA’s Helpline information and website on the back. Give hints where to find them. Have people who do find them post a pic with hashtags. #TealRocks #KindnessRocks #SAAM2022
Ask a Restaurant, Business, or Library to Host a SAAM Day or Display. LaFASA can supply brochures, adult and child activity & coloring books, one-pagers, and Helpline promotional materials. Ask your place of business or your bank or your local grocery store if you can set up a table for either a display all month long or for a couple of hours one day. Do a tabling day at your school’s “Free Speech Alley” or in a public area. Set up a display in the foyer or common areas in your school’s union, in your dorm, or apartment complex.
Contact your library or a local bookstore and ask to set up a display during April. Material suggestions:
